With 41.1 million followers, Kourtney Kardashian has one of the most popular Instagram accounts in the world. This weekend, the celebrity's account featured a picture of a Brigham Young University student dressed in a “Little Mermaid” costume.
Teresa Jack, a 25-year-old member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lifelong fan of the Disney film, entered a costume contest Saturday at “The Little Mermaid Live” at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Jack didn’t win the contest, but her costume attracted the attention of Kardashian, who posted a photo of Jack on Instagram with the caption, “How cute is this girl in her Ariel costume?!” The photo has more than 305,000 likes on Instagram.
According to a Facebook post that she titled "Modest Mermaids," Jack consciously created a less-revealing version of the costume. She added beaded purple gems and pearls to a skin-colored leotard rather than simply wearing a shell bra like the one the animated character wears.
“I want to argue that class is always in fashion,” Jack, who served a mission in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission, wrote on Facebook. “There were literally hundreds of girls dressed as Ariel at this concert, but mine was of the few which covered the midriff and shoulders. … I want younger girls to know that you don’t need to let society dictate your fashion choices! You don’t need to be your mom’s age to appreciate the quiet dignity that comes from serving yourself and the Lord in how you dress. Kourtney sharing this modest mermaid goes to show that modest choices are every bit as beautiful as the next.”
