WEST JORDAN — Police say a suspicious backpack left behind at a courthouse in West Jordan contained drug paraphernalia.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says court officers watching security cameras saw a man drop off the bag near a generator behind the building Tuesday afternoon and walk away.

Hoyal says officers spotted the man close by near a library and park and asked him about the bag, which he denied was his.

Officers detained the man while bomb technicians X-rayed the backpack to ensure it was safe and found drug paraphernalia inside, Hoyal said.

The building was not evacuated, and Utah Courts spokesman Geoffrey Fattah said court operations were not disrupted.

Hoyal said the man was arrested for investigation of several charges, including resisting arrest and drug possession.
