Another former University of Utah player is joining the NFL ranks. Rookie linebacker Jason Whittingham has signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings, Utah football announced Wednesday.

After going undrafted in April, Whittingham attended Oakland Raiders rookie minicamp on a tryout basis but did not sign a contract at that time.

It's the second signing by a Utah rookie in as many days, after former Ute quarterback Kendal Thompson announced on Instagram that he signed with the Washington Redskins, where he'll play wide receiver.

That makes 74 players with local ties on NFL rosters, including 29 former Utes. There are six Utah rookies currently on teams, including running back Devontae Booker, a fourth-round pick by Denver.

Minnesota's rookies and veterans report for camp on Thursday. Whittingham, a Timpview High product, is one of 10 linebackers on the roster, including two other rookies.

Whittingham wrapped up his Utah career last season with 26 tackles and six tackles for loss.
