While Big 12 expansion talk has slowed to next to nothing, Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman shared a piece of important information about who is pushing for BYU.

He writes, "But one Big 12 school official said 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has called power brokers, including Oklahoma State’s T. Boone Pickens, lobbying for support for BYU to join the conference. Romney is a BYU grad."

Bohls also shares how the process is coming along for Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, saying, "He’s almost done going through applicants’ one-hour video presentations and has had 'several calls”'with Big 12 presidents to update them."

BYU, Utah ranked as ‘Tier 4' teams by SB Nation

Bill Connelly of SB Nation ranked each of the 128 FBS college football teams heading into the 2016 season.

He placed the teams into eight tiered groups based on his opinion.

As for how the teams were ranked he writes, "This was like a series of ladder matches: Whom would I pick if these two teams played on a neutral field? I adhered mostly to the conference-specific power rankings I had already crafted, though in rare cases, I did some rearranging."

Both BYU and Utah landed in the "Tier 4: A couple will play at top-20 level," group. Tier 4 is comprised of the teams ranked 27-41 which also includes Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Boise State and Texas.

Both schools came in the bottom end of the tier with the Utes ranked at No. 37 and the Cougars at No. 39.

Utah State landed at No. 85 on the list.
