LEHI — The nationally ranked Pleasant Grove varsity team is so deep and talented that its junior varsity team came away with the tournament title at the 40-team Wasatch Volleyball Festival.
It wasn't that the field wasn't loaded with talented teams. In the championship finals the Vikings defeated perennial 5A power Lone Peak, a program that has won five 5A titles in the last 13 years. Also in the tournament was Timpview, winner of multiple 4A titles in recent years and Sky View, also a 4A state champion in recent years.
Region 4 flexed its muscles producing the top four teams in the gold bracket. Pleasant Grove JV defeated American Fork in the semifinals while Lone Peak got past Westlake.
Region 7 also showed its mettle as Timpview qualified for the gold bracket (the top eight teams in the tournament) and Skyridge won the silver bracket defeating North Sanpete in the finals. Corner Canyon and Mountain View made the semifinals of the silver bracket and fell to Skyridge and North Sanpete, respectively. Juan Diego defeated Maple Mountain to win the bronze bracket.
The tournament also had a division putting together some of the smaller school programs. Juab defeated South Summit to win the title in this portion of the tournament while Waterford finished third and Dugway fourth.
