SHARE College football countdown No. 26: Utah defensive lineman Luther Elliss

Editor's note: In anticipation of the 121st college football season in Utah, DeseretNews.com writer Jay Yeomans is ranking the 50 greatest Division I college football players of all time from the state of Utah. We're counting down the 50 days until Sept. 1 when Southern Utah at Utah and Weber State at Utah State kick off at 6 p.m. Rankings are based on what the player did during his college career.

26. Luther Elliss, Utah, defensive tackle (1991-94)

When talking about great defensive players who played at Utah under Ron McBride, Elliss is the first who comes to mind. After having some nice production as a freshman, he stepped up and terrorized opposing offenses for three straight First-Team All-WAC seasons during his legendary career on the defensive line for the Utes.

One of his best seasons came in 1994 when he was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus First-Team All-American after he totaled 78 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks and a forced fumble.

For his Utah career, he finished with 239 tackles, including an astounding 47 tackles for loss, 18 sacks and five pass break-ups.
