Thanks to Stanley Ivie for reminding us of the lessons and example of Gandhi ("Lessons from Gandhi," July 30). Gandhi also said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." There is much good in our world right now. For example, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria is on track to save 22 million lives by the end of this year. With continued funding, that number will be 30 million by 2019, since the Global Fund began in 2002. Or how about a program that could end hunger in America? SNAP, formerly food stamps, is such a program, though it has never been fully funded and is currently facing cuts. As citizens in a democracy, we can call or write our representatives and ask them to continue robustly funding the Global Fund and fully fund SNAP to end hunger in America. We can be the change we wish to see in the world.
