SALT LAKE CITY — Utah senior kicker Matt Gay has officially been granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. The former Utah Valley University soccer player, who is in his first season with the Utes and currently leads the nation in kicking, received an eligibility clock extension related to his LDS Church mission. The university made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. Gay has made all 14 of his field-goal attempts and PATs in his inaugural college football campaign.
STANFORD’S LOVE: As running backs coach, Utah assistant Kiel McDonald has a pretty good take on Stanford star Bryce Love’s productivity. The junior leads the nation in rushing with 1,088 yards.
McDonald credits much of Love’s success to Stanford’s offensive line.
“Obviously, Mr. Love is very fast. He’s well coached by coach Gould over there,” McDonald said. “But I tell you what, those five guys are making some holes for him and they’re doing a good job.”
EXTRA POINTS: Utah is 4-4 after regular-season bye weeks since beginning Pac-12 play in 2011 ... The Utes will wear throwback jerseys and helmets on Saturday ... The Utah coaching staff is going to sport “Coach to Cure MD” patches for the game. It’s part of a national charity initiative by the American Football Coaches Association to combat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
