BALLARD, Uintah County — A 2-year-old girl has died in what investigators are calling an accidental shooting.
The girl was inside her Ballard home on Sunday, according to a statement from the Uintah County Sheriff's Office, "when she was accidentally shot while an older sibling was moving a gun."
The gun was brought inside the house following a hunting trip the day before and leaned against a wall, according to the sheriff's office. The girl and some other siblings were cleaning up toys when "one of the older siblings went to move the gun from inside the house to another location. In the process of moving the gun, it discharged, fatally wounding the 2-year-old girl," the sheriff's office stated.
The investigation into the incident was ongoing Monday.
"Our thoughts and prayers will be with the family of the victim as they go through this tragedy," the department said.
