SANDY — With less than a minute to play in the third period, junior guard Tyler Fairbanks drained his sixth trey of the evening which all but took the wind out of the Hawks' sails and led to an eventual 65-46 rout.
After the game, Fairbanks said, "I played JV last year and did pretty much what I am doing this year but I really enjoy playing varsity this year. We keep improving on defense and that leads to better offense."
Fairbanks was the high point man on the court with 23 points. Junior center Matt Van Komen added 19 points. When asked how he handled all the pounding on his 7-foot-4 frame, Van Komen said, "Tonight wasn't too bad; it can get worse. I've gained a few pounds and hit the weights, so that helps."
Vikings head coach Randy McAllister added, "I am pleased with the team as a whole as they get noisy and support the guys on the court. They play well together. We are missing an experienced guard who rolled his ankle a couple of games ago but he will be back soon."
Alta senior guard Taylor Moore led the Hawks with 17 points.
Pleasant Grove ended the night with seven treys, 18 field goals and eight free throws. Alta had four treys, 12 field goals and 10 free throws.
Alta's next game is against Fremont Thursday (9:30 pm) in the Coach Walker Classic. The Hawks' first region game is Jan. 12 (7 p.m.) against Cottonwood.
Pleasant Grove is now 5-1 overall. The Vikings' next game is Friday at Timpanogos (7 p.m.). Pleasant Grove's first region game is Jan. 19 (7 p.m.) at Westlake.
