BYU welcomed Jeff Grimes back to its coaching staff on Thursday, as the former Cougars offensive line coach was named as the team's new offensive coordinator.
The news sent fans and former players alike to Twitter to share their thoughts on Grimes, who served as LSU's running game coordinator and offensive line coach from 2014-17.
Several former BYU players who suited up for the Cougars during Grimes' first stint at the school (from 2004-06) shared their optimism over the hire.
Grimes coached me and his football knowledge and feel for the game is incredible! I am so pumped to get him back here. Play calling experience is important but not nearly as big a deal as all these other things! BYU is going to love this hire!— Lance Reynolds, MBA (@lancereynoldsjr) December 14, 2017
Great hire! Coach Grimes is a technician and very detailed oriented. Although I lined up across the ball from him, I always had a lot of respect for him when he was here at BYU. Excited to welcome Coach Grimes to Provo! https://t.co/tpvSSaLhqs— David Nixon (@D_Nixon) December 14, 2017
Another former Cougar sees it as perhaps more of a short-term hire.

Coach Grimes is a great hire for BYU. He has toughness, experience, respect and smarts. Welcome back to Provo! @BYUfootball— Chad Lewis (@Chadlewis89) December 14, 2017
Grimes' hire also garnered a welcome from Cougar defensive end Sione Takitaki.
Welcome to the family coach Grimes!!!!— Sione Takitaki (@STakitaki) December 14, 2017
Former BYU offensive lineman and radio personality Hans Olsen broke down what Grimes is leaving at LSU, and what the conclusions could be for BYU and Kalani Sitake's pitch.
Jeff Grimes is leaving:— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) December 14, 2017
$560,000 + extension
9-3 2017 season
Power 5 conference
Hallowed recruiting territory
VERY stable sittuation
Kalani Sitake is a salesman.
Grimes has a plan & wants to grow his resume.
BYU paid the man.
A pair of Cougar fans shared their thoughts on how the move could show how BYU is overcoming obstacles the program faces.
Given BYU's unique restrictions (money, culture, status, etc.), Jeff Grimes is about as perfect a hire as you can possibly get. Way to go, BYU. This one surprised me. A lot.— Adam Olsen (@aolsen) December 14, 2017
The biggest think with the Jeff Grimes hiring is that not only that he gets paid well he needs to be able to get the staff paid well so he can get the coaches he wants hopefully #BYU is opening up the wallet and no longer being cheap!!!!— lhcoug (@lhcoug) December 14, 2017
There was a BYU basketball crossover comment as well. Could Grimes have the same effect for football as Heath Schroyer has had initially for Cougar basketball?
https://twitter.com/CoachWilk3/status/941338860180586496A lack of offensive coordinator experience for Grimes does make some give pause to the hire.
Good resume, but never been an OC. Not quite ready to start with the "Jeff Freakin Grimes!" stuff yet.— David P. Peterson (@DwunderkndP) December 14, 2017
Never been an OC, coached at big-time schools and never advanced past O-line coach. If he's the OC, it's another total crap-shoot. https://t.co/4rNZ1pA91z— Teeps (@SportsGuyRyan) December 14, 2017
An LSU fan shared his thoughts that BYU would be getting a solid offensive coordinator and lists Grimes' accolades as an offensive line coach for the Tigers.
As an LSU fan: great recruiter, loves to pull out the Kate surprise on the recruiting trail, lines sometimes start bad in the season, but adjusts well throughout to find the right fit.Great man off the field.Go look up his adoption story.— Chris Forester (@doctor_4ster) December 14, 2017
Developed two true freshman this past year to start most games on the O-line. One of them was awarded All-SEC freshman team.— Chris Forester (@doctor_4ster) December 14, 2017
This BYU fan called out for Twitter coaches to send ideas his way.
Don't forget to send the new coach your advice twitter coaches.— Pooh (@bigunclepooh) December 14, 2017
Which developed into a conversation about BBQing.
@coachgrimey I'd send him advice, but not sure rib and Brisket tips would help.— Pooh (@bigunclepooh) December 14, 2017
The announcement, of course, brought out some rivalry talk.
We got Jeff Grimes!!! We got Jeff Freaking Grimes!!! ..... Wait, who is Jeff Grimes. *google searches* *reads results but, doesn’t click on any articles* We are going undefeated!!!— Bob Gaducci (@BobGaducci) December 14, 2017
And the hire just wouldn't be complete without a Simpsons GIF:
