Westminster basketball: Griffins score 90 points in win

Westminster men's basketball (8-1, 4-1 RMAC) successfully defended its unbeaten home record against the 15th ranked Skyhawks of Fort Lewis (8-2, 5-1 RMAC). The Griffins are now 7-0 at home after defeating the Skyhawks, 90-75.

Fort Lewis scored the first basket of the game, and that was the only lead it held during the first half. Westminster scored 43 points and had a four-point lead at halftime. Same Orchard, 13 points, and Dayon Goodman, 17 points, combined for 30 of the 43 points.

The second half was contested more than the first. The Skyhawks began the second half making an 18-6 run, taking the lead from the Griffins. The away team held on to that lead until 10 minutes were remaining. A layup by Quincy Bair and Goodman tied the game, 50-50. Orchard and Mason Smith combined to score the next 15 points of the game, giving the Griffins a 10-point lead with just more than four minutes remaining. The lead was too much for Fort Lewis to come back from, and the Griffins finished the game with a 15-point lead, defeating Fort Lewis, 90-75.

Four Griffins scored in double-digit figures. Orchard scored 26 points, an individual career high, to lead the team and was 8-of-10 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Goodman scored 17 points in the first half and finished the night with 24 points. Smith scored 17 points, an individual career high, and was perfect from the free-throw line on six attempts. Bair scored 10 points.

Goodman earned a double-double collecting 13 rebounds, tying his single-game high from last year against Black Hills State. Orchard grabbed five boards, and Smith pulled four rebounds down.

The Griffins play Adams State (5-6, 3-2 RMAC) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door prior to the game. The game will be broadcast on the RMAC Network, and live stats will also be available.
