Wasatch Academy, Orem, Timpview and Timpanogos to battle out-of-state powers in Great Western Shootout

The seventh annual Vivint Great Western Shootout tournament will be held at Orem High School from Dec. 7-9.

This year’s tournament features Wasatch Academy, which is ranked No. 15 in the nation. It also includes Smoky Hill, the top-ranked school in Colorado, along with Richland High School from Washington, British Columbia Christian Academy and Wakefield High School from Arlington, Virginia.

Orem, Timpview and Timpanogos will also be participating in the tournament.

“I like the geographic mix that we have for the tournament. We have teams from the east, some of the best teams in the west and a team from Canada,” said Golden Holt, who is the tournament director and Orem High School’s basketball coach. “One of the things that sets us apart from other tournaments in Utah is we offer Utah teams a chance to play against some of the top teams from around the country and this year I think we have some really fun matchups that will be entertaining.”

Action tips off on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. with Wasatch Academy and Wakefield. Timpanogos and British Columbia Christian Academy will follow at 4:45 p.m. Timpview will take on Smoky Hill at 6:15 and Orem will host Richland (7:30.) in the final game of the night at Orem.

The tournament resumes on Friday at 3:30 p.m. with Timpanogos and Richland. Wakefield and Timpview will take the court next, followed by BC Christian and Orem at 6:15. The Utah Jazz Dunk Team will perform at halftime. Smoky Hill and Wasatch Academy are scheduled to tip off at 7:30.

Saturday the action begins at 2 p.m. but the matchups are not set because that will be determined by results from the first two days.

“The community has really embraced the tournament and we couldn’t do this without the partnerships with our sponsors,” Holt said. “Vivint has really stepped up and we have over 100 volunteers who will put in countless hours to help this be a first-class event.”

Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Admission is $10 for the day. Students and seniors are $5.
