HEBER CITY — Police say one of the drivers in a head-on crash that killed three people may have been impaired.
The Utah Highway Patrol has also identified the three fatal victims of the Tuesday morning wreck.
The crash occurred near Heber City around 7:15 a.m. when an eastbound 2006 Honda Civic drifted into westbound traffic on U.S. 40 and collided with an oncoming 2013 Kia Rio, the UHP reported.
"Impairment on the driver of the Honda is being investigated as a factor for the crash," the agency said in a statement Wednesday.
That driver, 27-year-old Miguel J. Huitron of Salt Lake City, was killed on impact. His backseat passenger, 27-year-old Cindy A. Cruz of West Jordan, was airlifted to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Kia, Christina L. Macinauskas, 29, of Heber City, also died after being flown by helicopter to a hospital.
An additional female Honda passenger remained in very critical condition Wednesday. A male passenger in the Kia remained in serious condition, but was expected to survive.
Speed and "chemical impairment" are the main factors being investigated as possibly leading to the crash, said UHP Sgt. Todd Royce.
