SALT LAKE CITY — A jail sentence has been suspended for a man who threatened a "rampage" at a Draper hospital last year.

George Allen Handley, 49, faced a possible year in jail after pleading guilty in September to making a threat of terrorism, reduced to a class A misdemeanor from a third-degree felony. In exchange for his plea, additional misdemeanor charges of drug and weapon possession were dismissed.

Handley was given credit Jan. 17 for the 88 days he had already served in jail while the remainder of the year sentence was suspended.

Handley was also ordered to complete 36 months probation, comply with drug and alcohol testing, complete any recommended substance abuse and mental health treatment, and obtain a high school diploma or GED, according to court records.

According to police, Handley called Lone Peak Hospital on Aug. 12 angry about care he had received, sending the facility into lockdown.

"He wanted to know specifically who was working in the emergency room because he was coming to the hospital and threatened to 'go on a rampage,'" according to charging documents.

Officers were waiting at the hospital when Handley arrived with a 12-inch kitchen knife and a fixed blade utility knife inside a bag he had with him, charges state.

Hospital staff told police they had been harassed by Handley in the past, including a day earlier.
