BYU men’s golf currently sits in fourth place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday.
"We played solid golf most of the day, and then we struggled," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Patrick (Fishburn) and Spencer (Dunaway) made a bunch of birdies in the middle of the round. We need to figure out a way to finish our rounds. We are still in a good position, but we need to go have a really good round tomorrow from the whole team if we are going to have a chance to make a run at the tournament on Friday."
BYU looks to garner what would be its fourth first-place finish of the 2016-17 campaign, and first of the spring season.
The No. 46 ranked Cougars shot 4-under par (284) through the first 18 holes as a team, and they sit behind Virginia, Texas A&M and UNLV. Virginia leads all teams shooting 20-under par. West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara is in fifth place at 1-under par.
Junior Patrick Fishburn, who was ranked 21st in the first of three spring Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings, led the Cougars, shooting 4-under par in round one. Fishburn carded 5-under par on the back nine, birdying holes 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16. The junior is tied for sixth place.
Rhett Rasmussen and Peter Kuest each finished the round at 1-under par. Rasmussen and Kuest are tied for 14th place individually.
Spencer Dunaway and CJ Lee finished the day tied for 51st place, each shooting 2-over par.
Zach Pritchard and Austen Christiansen competed in the event individually. Pritchard also finished the day at 2-over par and is tied for 51st place. Christiansen rounded out the scoring, shooting 4-over par and is currently in 69th place.
The Cougars continue tournament play on Thursday as pairings tee off at 8:30 a.m. HST, in a shotgun start. Links to live stats can be found on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
