SALT LAKE CITY — Democrat Faeiza Javed withdrew her candidacy Wednesday for the 3rd Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, at the end of June.
Javed, first vice chairwoman of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party, was one of four Democrats seeking to fill the remainder of Chaffetz's term. The congressman is stepping down to take a private sector position believed to be with Fox News.
Twenty-two candidates affiliated with political parties had filed for the seat by last Friday's deadline. The three Democrats still seeking their party's nomination are Kathie Allen, Carl Ingwell and Ben Frank.
Javed was set to compete only at the Democratic Party's June 17 convention because she was not gathering voter signatures to guarantee a spot on the August primary election ballot.
She withdrew in a handwritten note submitted to the lieutenant governor's office.
Voters in District 3, which includes portions of Salt Lake and Utah counties as well as Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan, and Wasatch counties, will choose their new representative in Congress on Nov. 7.
