PROVO — Police say a grandfather and a 5-year-old boy who were hit by a car Saturday afternoon are expected to make a full recovery.

Both the child and grandfather sustained severe injuries after being struck by an 18-year-old suspected of driving drowsy. The driver also hit and killed 6-year-old Iris Arnold, who had just left a birthday party for her friend.

Police said the driver veered off the road near 2900 W. Center, hitting all three as they were standing near a parked car.

Iris died of her injuries at an area hospital while her cousin was rushed by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital. Her grandfather was admitted to Utah Valley Hospital.

Investigators said Tuesday they have ruled out driving under the influence as a factor in the accident, but they say the 18-year-old may have been drowsy. The city attorney for Provo will begin reviewing the case for potential charges.

The name of the driver has not been released.
