National Doughnut Day has been an unofficial holiday in the United States for nearly 80 years.
In 1917, The Salvation Army created a mission to boost morale for U.S. soldiers during World War I. About 250 volunteers responded to this call by traveling overseas and setting up small huts near the front lines where they offered soldiers clothes, supplies and baked goods. Some women even began frying doughnuts in soldiers’ helmets, according to centralusa.salvationarmy.org.
To honor these volunteers, The Salvation Army in Chicago established National Doughnut Day in 1938.
The holiday is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June. This year it falls on June 2.
