BYU student moving on to next round in 'Jeopardy'

Brandon Randall, a senior at Brigham Young University, won his first round on "Jeopardy" Monday and will be moving on to the next round today.

Randall was up against BYU alumna Elisabeth Larsen from Pleasant Grove and the previous champion Pat McNamee from McLean, Virginia.

Larsen was ahead by a decently large margin for the majority of the game, and McNamee trailed far behind both her and Randall for a long time. Then, at the end of Double Jeopardy, McNamee caught up until he was tied with Larsen at $20,000 going into Final Jeopardy, and it was Randall who was now far behind.

The Final Jeopardy answer referenced the baby christened at the end of "Godfather" who later won an Oscar — the question being "Who is Sofia Coppola?", director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. And only Randall got the question right.

Randall bet exactly enough to reach $20,001, and both McNamee and Larsen bet large chunks of money, leaving him the clear winner despite almost never being ahead for the duration of the game.

During introductions with Alex Trebec, Larsen shared a story about her friends who threw her a "Jeopardy"-themed baby shower, and Randall talked about his deep love of cows. Viewers can see what he'll share with Trebec this time and if his winning streak will continue today at 6:30 p.m. on KJZZ Salt Lake City.
