Dixie State University men’s soccer junior defender Bryan Baugh and women’s soccer junior forward Darian McCloy were each named 2016-17 Pacific West Conference Scholar Athletes for their respective sports, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The duo has advanced on for consideration for the 2016-17 PacWest Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Baugh (Henderson, Nevada/Green Valley HS), who is a three-time Academic all-PacWest honoree, was voted 2016 PacWest Defender of the Year and was a first-team all-PacWest and D2CCA West Region pick. In addition, he was a D2CCA Honorable Mention All-America selection and earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District and Second Team Academic All-America honors with a 3.88 GPA in criminal justice.

Baugh started in all 19 matches last season and anchored a defensive unit that allowed just 17 goals in 1,723-plus minutes played (0.89 GAA - 24th nationally). He helped lead DSU to eight shutout wins overall, including seven PacWest shutout results, as the Trailblazers won their first-ever PacWest championship and earned the program’s first NCAA tournament bid. On the offensive side, Baugh tallied his second career goal in a win vs. Fresno Pacific and dished out five assists on the year, which moved him atop DSU’s career assists list (13).

McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS), who is a three-time Academic all-PacWest selection, was named 2016 PacWest Conference Player of the Year and earned first-team all-PacWest honors after leading the league in goals scored (12) and was second overall in total points (26). She started in all 18 matches and accounted for 12 of DSU's 27 goals last season with a school-record five game-winning goals to her credit, including the Trailblazers’ final goal of the year in their dramatic 2-1 overtime home win over California Baptist.
