Letter: Ignorance of details

The weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth on the left over U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Accord is exceeded only by their collective ignorance of the details of that agreement. Despite imposing costly reductions of carbon emissions on the U.S., it explicitly allows the world’s worst polluters to increase emissions. To add insult to unfairness, it requires the U.S. to contribute billions of dollars to a global fund, presumably to assist those worst polluters to reduce emissions, without requiring them to do so. No wonder China and India agreed. So would I!

The Paris Accord is a fundamentally unfair deal that will produce only negligible net global change, despite the burden placed on the U.S. To those who want our participation in a global climate change agreement I ask only two things: make the required reductions apply equally and get the constitutionally mandated consent of the Senate. Our previous president lacked both the courage and the good sense to do either.
