Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer gave his six takeaways from the 2017 Las Vegas summer league, and one revolved around the play of Utah Jazz draft pick Donovan Mitchell.
"The best move Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey made this summer was not acquiring Ricky Rubio for virtually nothing," wrote O'Connor. "It was packaging Trey Lyles and the No. 24 pick to move up to No. 13 for Donovan Mitchell, a high-upside athlete whose talents have been put on display this summer."
O'Connor then broke down Mitchell's game on both ends of the floor, saying, "Mitchell has resembled an All-NBA defender by locking down virtually every opponent he’s faced. Few defenders possess his combination of length, muscle, and will. Even if Mitchell’s offense doesn’t develop an inch beyond its current level, he’s good enough as a spot-up shooter and a defender to sustain a long career."
After talking about Mitchell's last game in Las Vegas, O'Connor closed by saying, "There are 10 players that I think have chance of being the best player in the draft when we look back many years from now. Mitchell is one of them. It must be hard for Jazz fans to feel good about anything after losing Gordon Hayward. Hopefully Mitchell helps."
Steve Young snubbed by Sports Illustrated draft
"Young is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history: three-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP (XXIX), two-time NFL MVP, and more," wrote Kiernan. "He is without question one of the best to ever do it, but unfortunately not even he could cut it in the MMQB draft."
While Young was Kiernan's top ranked snub in the fantasy draft, three players who played their college ball in Utah did make the list in Utah State legend Merlin Olsen and former Utah Utes Larry Wilson and Mac Speedie.
Olsen came off the board first with the 10th pick of the third round (34th overall) by Bill Polian, while Wilson was up next with the fourth pick of the 12th round (136th overall) by Rick Gosselin.
Speedie, whose impressive career is often overlooked because he is not in the Hall of Fame, was the second pick of the 15th round (170th overall) by Ron Wolf.
