High school football roundup of Week 1: Photos, videos and stats

SALT LAKE CITY — Here's a complete roundup of the first week of high school football in Utah.

Friday's non-region games

CYPRUS 28, GRANTSVILLE 6: Cyprus scored on a kickoff return to open the game, and the Pirates never looked back as they opened the season with a victory over Grantsville.

SKYLINE 38, GRANGER 25: The Eagles jumped out to a 28-12 first half lead and never looked back en route to the season opening win against Granger. Tommy McGrath tossed in four touchdowns to lead the offense for Skyline.

WEST 64, HILLCREST 28: West used a dominant performance to land its first win in the last 18 games over Hillcrest. In a game that featured four kickoff returns for touchdowns, including three back-to-back-to-back, West used a superior offense to blow past Hillcrest.

CLEARFIELD 31, HUNTER 24: Clearfield outlasted Hunter to get the double overtime victory to start the season. Jaxson Mansfield found Devon Poll in the end zone for the TD to give the Falcons the win in the second overtime after both teams hit field goals in the first overtime. Mansfield threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Falcons, while the Wolverines’ Pailate Makakona had two long touchdown runs in the loss.

KEARNS 47, COPPER HILLS 18: Sese Felila led the way in Kearns’ easy win to start the season with 116 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Isaac Matua and Isaiah Afatasi each added a touchdown on the ground as well for the Cougars. Pono Kahala-Giron threw two TDs for the Grizzlies in the loss.

JUDGE MEMORIAL 22, OGDEN 10: The Bulldogs, powered by a strong rushing attack, went into Ogden and took down the Tigers. Joey Trotman and Zach Thomas each rushed for a score, as Judge Memorial outscored Ogden in three quarters. The Tigers took an early lead, on an 80-yard run by Rhyle Hanson, but failed to hold the lead from there.

MANTI 21, CARBON 14: Led by running back Lance Fowles, who rushed for two scores, the Templars held off the Lions for the victory. Jace Miller added another rushing touchdown for Manti, who were aided by a perfect kicking performance by Ivan Garcia.

BINGHAM 41, OREM 14: Braedon Wissler dominated on the ground for the Miners, scoring three rushing touchdowns — including a 70 yard dash — as Bingham dominated Orem. Puka Nacua scored the only two touchdowns for the Tigers. Watch the video replay.

JORDAN 45, DESERT HILLS 44: Jordan scored 16 points in the final period of regulation to send the game to overtime, where it edged out Desert Hills by one point. Desert Hills scored first in the extra period but the Beetdiggers blocked the PAT and then went on to score their own touchdown and extra point for the win. Crew Wakley led Jordan with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown, while the Thunder’s Noah Sewell was outstanding in the loss, scoring four rushing touchdowns and catching one more.

VIEWMONT 17, NORTHRIDGE 14: The Vikings’ Davis Weir and Tyson Handley linked up for two touchdowns while Preston Pitt hit a field goal as Viewmont edged out Northridge at home. Hunter Harris was solid for the Knights in the loss as he rushed for a touchdown and caught a pass from Jackson Murphy for another TD.

SKYRIDGE 48, RIVERTON 9: Trailing 9-7 at halftime, Skyridge outscored Riverton 41-0 in the second half to roll to the victory in Week 1.

BEAR RIVER 20, JUAN DIEGO 10: Bear River blew an early lead, only to roar back in the fourth quarter and defeat Juan Diego. The Bears scored 14 points in the fourth, while shutting out the Soaring Eagle in the period. Kaygen Canfield was electric for the victors, rushing for two scores, while Kelton Summers added a 20-yard touchdown reception, courtesy of Bradey Brown’s arm.

SALEM HILLS 38, BEN LOMOND 31: Down 31-30 late in the game, James Nelson connected with Jacob Rolfe on a 20-yard touchdown pass as the Skyhawks rallied past Ben Lomond to start the season off 1-0.

PINE VIEW 69, GREEN CANYON 21: Jacob Mpungi scored four rushing touchdowns, with Ryan Javines adding a passing and rushing touchdown as the Panthers rolled past first-year Green Canyon for the season-opening win.

SUMMIT ACADEMY 43, UNION 14: The Bears crushed the Utes, outscoring Union 43-6 through three quarters. Summit Academy quarterback Hayden Reynolds was the key, throwing for four scores, including two to Parker Clawson. Gavin Davey and Ammon Richards each hauled in a touchdown pass and the Bears benefited from a Mitch Hansen rushing score.

BRIGHTON 17, FREMONT 9: The Bengals overcame an early first quarter deficit, thanks to touchdowns by Trey Davenport and Nicholas Parker, and defeated the Silver Wolves. Davenport hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass while Parker rushed for a 47-yard score.

MORGAN 21, PARK CITY 20: Park City scored a touchdown with 25 seconds remaining but couldn’t convert the extra point as Morgan survived 21-20 for the season-opening victory. Jacob Stephens threw three touchdown passes in the victory for the Trojans.

DELTA 39, JUAB 32: The Rabbits and Wasps engaged in a thrilling back-and-forth affair that saw incredible effort from both sides. Delta proved the better, in large part due to the arm of quarterback Jake Day. Day threw four touchdown passes, including three to Trevor Burton. Burton was the Rabbits big play target, scoring a 70-yard touchdown as well as a 61-yard score. Kolbe Ballow was not too shabby either, with a 85-yard kick return for a score as well as two receiving touchdowns.

NORTH SEVIER 54, WAYNE 7: The Wolves capitalized on an early fumble recovery to set the tone and sailed to the easy win over Wayne in the season opener. Fernando Elmer ran in two touchdowns for the offense while teammate Riley Ogden added a 70-yard kick return for North Sevier.

WOODS CROSS 31, MAPLE MOUNTAIN 10: The Wildcats used a balanced offensive attack to pull away from Maple Mountain. Woods Cross scored two touchdowns through the air as well as two on the ground as the Wildcats earned their first win of the new season.

SOUTH SUMMIT 51, SAN JUAN 8: Kael Atkinson threw four touchdowns, including three to Keegan Stracher, as South Summit rolled past San Juan for the season-opening victory on the road.

PROVO 13, CEDAR 6: Braiden Lovell connected with Nick Stoddard on a 5-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter which proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs edged Cedar for the season-opening win.

ROY 27, SYRACUSE 24: Tyrese Rowan scored two touchdowns for the Royals, including a 98 yard kickoff return. Roy fought off a furious 14 point fourth quarter rally from the Titans to hold on for the first win of the season.

BOX ELDER 39, LAYTON 14: The Bees kicked off the season with bang, outscoring the Lancers 22-0 in the first quarter alone. Quarterback Jeremy Kaleikini was superb, tossing three touchdowns in the period, five in the game. Colton Kapp and Conner Stevenson each hauled in two touchdowns in the victory.

AMERICAN FORK 54, WEBER 39: American Fork Quarterback Bronson Barron threw three touchdown passes to lead the Cavemen to victory in an extremely high scoring game. Weber scored 20 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Warriors fell.

RICHFIELD 21, EMERY 14: Tason Lacorti scored on a 53-yard TD reception on a 12-yard TD run as Richfield opened the season with a close victory over visiting Emery.

DIXIE 35, SPRINGVILLE 34: Jacob Barben threw two touchdowns, with Hobbs Nyberg scoring on a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown as Dixie edged Springville in an exciting season-opening game. Dixie blocked a Springville extra point with 1:55 remaining in the game.

SKY VIEW 27, STANSBURY 17: Sky View erased an early deficit and picked up the road win over Stansbury. The Stallions jumped out to a early 17-point lead but the Bobcats took control of the game and scored 27 unanswered points. Koebe Wilson started the Bobcats’ scoring flurry with a 94-yard kick return. Later Jackson Siddoway

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 14, NORTH SUMMIT 0: Dustin Moffo scored on a rushing touchdown in the first half and then Malcolm Smauldon hauled in a receiving touchdown in the second half as Layton Christian shut out North Summit to open the season with a win.

KANAB 23, SOUTH SEVIER 7: The Cowboys scored consistently in each quarter to pull away from South Sevier and secure the home victory. Tavin Ott tossed in two touchdowns and ran in another to help lead Kanab to the win.

GRAND 39, MONTICELLO 6: Dante Wells and Brayden Schultz each ran in two touchdowns for the Red Devil offense while the defense limited Monticello to just one scoring play in the season opener. Watch the video replay here.

MILFORD 49, GUNNISON 14: Bryson Barnes threw two touchdowns, including two to Tyler Davis, as the Tigers rolled past Gunnison for the lopsided victory.

PAROWAN 53, ALTAMONT 0: Ethan Guymon scored five touchdowns as Parowan rolled past Altamont for the season-opening victory on the road. Watch the video replay here.

DUCHESNE 15, AMERICAN LEADERSHIP 6: The Duchesne Eagles jumped out to an early lead, and then closed strong for good measure in the win over American Leadership Academy. Dallas Stewart hauled in a 20-yard score and Weston Poulson had a 40-yard reception, both from quarterback Jarett Spencer.

BOUNTIFUL 27, DAVIS 2: Bridger Freestone scored on a 67-yard touchdown run, while Cameron Hensen scored on a 62-yard fumble recovery as Bountiful opened the season with a strong defensive victory over Davis.

TOOELE 41, NORTH SANPETE 0: Tooele jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and continued on to shut out North Sanpete in the season opener. Nukuluve Heluaccounted for three touchdowns, including a blocked kick, a pick-6, and a 41-yard run to help lift the Buffaloes to the victory.

CORNER CANYON 31, PLEASANT GROVE 10: The Chargers were nearly flawless in the victory over Pleasant Grove, reaching the end zone in each and every quarter. Zach Wilson was the star of the night, with three rushing touchdowns. Corner Canyon also benefited from a pick-six, courtesy of Brad Findlay. Watch the video replay here.

WEST JORDAN 41, WESTLAKE 14: The Jaguars and Thunder were locked in a tight one through two quarters, but everything changed in the second half. West Jordan racked up 31 second half points, while shutting out Westlake, securing the win. Bryson Percival led the way, with a receiving touchdown and and a fumble recovery for a score. Forest Rich, Kasey Briggs and Brandon Diaz each added rushing touchdowns for the Jaguars.

LONE PEAK 26, HERRIMAN 13: Brock Jones tossed in three touchdowns and kicker Nate Ritchie had two field goals as Lone Peak shook off its first half jitters to defeat Herriman in the season opener.

SPANISH FORK 22, RIDGELINE 8: Carson Chappell, Mateen Lomax, and Noah Conway all scored touchdowns as Spanish Fork jumped out to a 16-0 lead on Ridgeline after three quarters en route to the win. Watch the video replay here.

HURRICANE 30, MOUNTAIN VIEW 6: Hurricane jumped out to a big 30-0 halftime lead and coasted from there as the Tigers rolled to the season-opening win at Mountain View.

TAYLORSVILLE 34, MURRAY 3: Dane Leituala threw two touchdowns and ran for three more to help Taylorsville take down Murray in the season opener.

MILLARD 24, ENTERPRISE 14: After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Millard rattled off 24 straight points to pull out an improbable come from behind win over Enterprise.

BONNEVILLE 34, LOGAN 14: Bonneville Quarterback Jonah Nielson threw two touchdown passes to lead the Lakers to a dominant win over Logan.

MOUNTAIN CREST 22, HIGHLAND 21: Down 21-14, Mountain Crest’s Brady Hall had his third rushing touchdown of the night with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter. Hall then caught a pass from Nick Nethercott on a 2-point conversion to take the lead over Highland which would hold for the win. Marlon Jones was great for the Rams in the loss, catching two TD passes from Cole Peterson and rushing for another touchdown.

TIMPANOGOS 34, PAYSON 14: The Timberwolves took defeated the Lions thanks in large part to strong games from Rory Ziegra and Gabe Sweeten. Sweeten, the Timpanogos quarterback, threw for two scores and rushed for another. Ziegra, meanwhile, rushed for an additional two touchdowns.

OLYMPUS 45, COTTONWOOD 7: Harrison Creer had an outstanding game for Olympus in its big win with 218 yards passing and five touchdown passes. Creer found five different receivers for his TD passes, while teammate Jack Hollberg rushed for over 100 yards and capped the Titan’s night with a rushing touchdown. Watch the video replay here.

SNOW CANYON 49, UINTAH 14: Snow Canyon Quarterback Austin Staheli dominated, throwing two touchdown passes and running for another, to lead the Warrior’s to a dominant first game victory. Staheli finished the game with three total touchdowns, completing 12 of 18 passes for 262 yards.

BEAVER 46, CANYON VIEW 0: The Beavers were absolutely dominant in the victory, led by multiple touchdown scorers Walter Lebaron and Porter Hollingshead. Lebaron also connected on four extra points, while Hollingshead threw for two scores and rushed for another.

LEHI 72, ALTA 66: Cammon Cooper passed for 599 yards with 10 touchdowns as Lehi rallied to take the double overtime victory over Alta in a hard-fought victory.

Thursday's non-region game

EAST 42, TIMPVIEW 10: Jaylon Vickers dominated for the Leopards, intercepting two passes while returning one for a touchdown, and also catching a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Ford as the Leopards dominated Timpview.
