The tool uses a gallium beam to etch down to the nanoscale. In the case of Polson"™s red blood cells, each of the cells are about 7 microns in diameter or about 10 times smaller than a human hair. According the the U., the ion beam tool can actually etch not just hard materials but soft ones as well, such as blood cells. Normally, the FEI ion beam tool produces a black and white image, so Polson colorized the red blood cells using a software program. Polson recently produced the photo for a monthly photo contest that is put on by FEI, a company that manufactures scientific microscopes and made this ion beam tool. He titled the photo, "The U is in my blood."
