OREM — Police say a blown tire caused a dump truck to veer across traffic on I-15 and crash into a median, killing the driver and causing all lanes on the northbound side of the freeway to close for nearly three hours.

The driver, who died at the scene, was identified as Allen C. Cox, 76, of Provo, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.

Investigators believe the dump truck blew a tire about 10:20 a.m. near 1600 North in Orem while traveling in the far right northbound lane, Royce said. The vehicle veered left across all lanes of traffic and smashed into the median.

The severe impact dislodged the dump bed and sent it back across all lanes of traffic until it came to rest in the northbound right emergency lane, according to the sergeant. Some debris from the truck crossed into southbound traffic, causing minor damage to one car there.

All of northbound I-15 was blocked off for close to three hours while police examined and cleared the scene. Three lanes were opened to traffic shortly after 1 p.m., but the Utah Department of Transportation reported delays along that stretch during the afternoon.
