The Denver Post recently published an explainer piece on Bears Ears and the nationwide battle over the “gorgeous monument.”

As the Post explained, former President Barack Obama designated Bears Ears as a national monument last December, but President Donald Trump may reverse that decision.

Trump issued an executive order to review the site, along with 26 other land and marine monuments.

Protests have sprung up nationwide, opposing and supporting the monument.

The Denver Post said the designation (and its reversal) may have an effect on Newspaper Rock, a legendary spot in the area.

“It’s been described as spiritual and eerie,” according to The Denver Post. “There are drawings of humans with small heads and big bodies and of wheels that sit off on their own. There are also people on horseback and animals that were probably hunted as game.”
