NFL locals: Former Ute special teams players Phillips, Dominguez waived

Two longtime special teams stalwarts for the University of Utah were waived by their respective NFL teams.

The Chicago Bears announced Monday morning they have waived kicker Andy Phillips, one day after long snapper Chase Dominguez was waived by the New Orleans Saints.

“Very grateful for the short time I was able to be a Chicago Bear! Here’s to future opportunities,” Phillips tweeted Sunday night.

Phillips and Dominguez played together for four years at Utah and signed with their respective teams in late April after going undrafted in this year’s NFL draft.

The pair was cut days before either the Bears or Saints had played a preseason game. Chicago faces Denver on Thursday, while New Orleans takes on Cleveland the same night.

Phillips was trying to unseat 10-year veteran Connor Barth for the kicker position. Barth, like Phillips, started his NFL career as an undrafted free agent, eventually taking over as Kansas City’s kicker his rookie season in 2008 after getting cut near the end of training camp.

Dominguez, meanwhile, was one of two long snappers on the Saints’ roster entering training camp, but both he and Thomas Gafford were waived after the team re-signed Justin Drescher over the weekend. Drescher was the Saints’ long snapper the past seven years before becoming a free agent in March.
