ALTA — Rescuers were trudging through "knee-deep snow" to help two hikers that were "trapped in the cold" on Mount Superior in Little Cottonwood Canyon Saturday evening, police said.
The hikers — an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man — were near the Lake Blanche area when they called 911 for help about 7:30 p.m., saying they got caught in the storm and were lost, cold and wet, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.
"The snow is pretty deep at the elevation that they're at. They're pretty high up," Lohrke said. "This is weather that we're not really accustomed to in September, but something we have to be cautious of when we are outdoor recreating in the mountains of Utah."
Rescuers hiked through "knee-deep snow," Lohrke said, for more than 2 hours to reach them after locating their GPS coordinates.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m., rescuers reached the hikers and found them in good condition, Lohrke said.
The hikers were given food, water and dry clothes. Crews planned to hike down the mountain with them Saturday night via Mineral Fork Trail, expected to take between two to three hours, Lohrke said.
