CORINNE, Box Elder County — Two cousins riding motorcycles between cornfields were killed when their bikes hit each other, according to police.
Wyatt Ellertson, 15, was declared dead at the scene. Caden Ellertson, 14, was taken to Primary Children's Hospital before succumbing to his injuries. A third boy, 16, whose name was not released, was "stable" at University Hospital, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office.
On Tuesday, the sheriff's office released more information about the tragic weekend accident.
The three boys were riding dirt bikes between the two fields near 1400 North and 6000 West about 9 p.m. Sunday. Originally, authorities believed the dirt bikes hit head on. Investigators now believe the bikes "glanced off of each other at impact" while traveling between 30 mph and 40 mph.
Wyatt and Caden were the drivers of the motorcycles. The 16-year-old was a passenger.
Neither motorcycle was equipped with a headlight, the sheriff's office reported. Both drivers were wearing helmets, and there was no evidence of impairment, according to investigators.
