Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, will not seek another term in office.

Hatch announced Tuesday that he plans to retire from the United States Senate, where he’s served for more than 40 years.

Previous reports have suggested that Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and U.S. presidential candidate, would run in Hatch’s absence.

Romney himself thanked Hatch on Twitter.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert also responded to the news:

Following Hatch's announcement, Romney's name started trending on Twitter, where social media users began discussing his possible candidacy.

One reporter pointed what makes Romney a unique candidate.

New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin revealed a little more information about the decision.

Twitter users pointed out why Romney would not be an ally of President Donald Trump, given the two politicians’ mixed history.

Not everyone was happy with a potential Sen. Romney, though.

People also had some fun with Romney potentially running.

If Romney doesn’t run, is there someone else waiting in the wings?
