NORFOLK, Va. — A Utah man has been charged with the New Year's Eve shooting death of a Norfolk, Virginia, schoolteacher.
Edward Alan Shaw, 70, of Sevier County, was charged Tuesday with murder, a second-degree felony, in Norfolk, Virginia, for the shooting death of Caroline M. Hendrix, 50, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Shaw is currently in a Virginia hospital after being "shot by an acquaintance of Hendrix who was attempting to come to her aid," according to a statement from the Norfolk Police Department.
Hendrix was shot multiple times about 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and found inside her vehicle by emergency responders, police said. About an hour later, Shaw was found with multiple gunshot wounds at another location. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Shaw claimed he was the victim of a road rage incident. But investigators "found no evidence to support the allegation," according to a police statement.
Hendrix was a teacher at Oceanair Elementary School. Whether Shaw and Hendrix knew each other prior to the shooting was not revealed Wednesday. It was also not immediately known why Shaw was in Virginia.
