USU basketball: women's hoops set for Wednesday game at New Mexico

Utah State women's basketball (5-16, 3-7 MW) will play its sole game of the week at New Mexico (16-6, 4-5 MW) on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m.

New Mexico opens the week of competition with a 16-6 overall record, going 4-5 in Mountain West play. The Lobos have lost their last three contest, most recently dropping a 74-71 overtime game at Colorado State. New Mexico’s last win came on Jan. 13, an 88-75 home victory over Fresno State.

New Mexico returned three starters and five total letterwinners to the floor this season, after going 15-15 overall and 10-8 in league play last season. Senior guard Cherise Beynon leads the Lobos and ranks second in the Mountain West in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game. Junior center Jaisa Nunn is the top rebounder for the team and the conference, averaging 10.1 boards per game. As a team, New Mexico is averaging a league-high 83.5 points per game, while allowing 73.4 points from its opponents. The Lobos are shooting 42.8 percent (650-of-1518) from the floor, 35.9 percent (208-of-579) from the 3-point line and 74.9 percent (329-of-439) from the free-throw line. Mike Bradbury is in his second season at the helm of the New Mexico program where he has an overall record of 31-21.

The Lobos hold the lead in the all-time series with Utah State, 15-6, in games dating back to the 1974-75 season. The Aggies have won just once in Albuquerque, doing so in the 2013-14 season. New Mexico has won the last three contests in the series, with Utah State’s last victory coming on January 9, 2016.

Sophomore guard Olivia West is the leading scorer for the Aggies, averaging 12.7 points per game, while sophomore guard/forward Shannon Dufficy is the top rebounder, averaging 8.2 boards per game. As a team, Utah State is shooting 39.4 percent (472-of-1197) from the field, 27.2 percent (97-of-3457) from the 3-point line and 67.7 percent (195-of-288) from the free-throw line.
