That’s always our plan: go hard go fast; go long; high risk, high reward. Our girls have bought into it, that’s the style they like to play. – Timpview coach Aimee Dorias
PROVO — The goal for Timpview in Thursday’s intriguing nonregion game against Westlake was a simple one: make it as chaotic as possible.
“Westlake is super-disciplined, they are really patient, and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen of them this year,” said Timpview coach Aimee Dorias. “So the goal was just to create a little bit of chaos with a super disciplined rotation of our own to try and force them to spots on the floor I haven’t seen them play this year.”
The approach allowed Timpview to dictate the tempo most of the night, and it eventually pulled away in convincing fashion for the 64-31 victory.
Leading by nine at the half, Timpview outscored Westlake 31-7 in the second half.
“That’s always our plan: go hard go fast; go long; high risk, high reward. Our girls have bought into it, that’s the style they like to play,” said Dorias. “They run hard everyday to be able to continue that for a 32-minute stretch.”
The first half was close as expected between two of the better teams in Utah County. In the third quarter, though, Westlake missed 19 straight shots before Jillian Vance scored on a layup with 25 seconds left in the quarter. By that point, however, Timpview had already broke the game wide open as it led 51-26 after the third.
Ella Pope led the T-Birds with 18 points, while Jasmine Espinoza and Shalyn Fano added 12 each in the preseason finale.
“There’s nothing a coach loves more than having a weapon, so to have four weapons at anytime on the floor is a luxury that I don’t take for granted,” said Dorias.
Westlake kept it close in the first half by crashing the glass, as its nine offensive rebounds led to six second-chance points. It actually finished with 11 offensive rebounds in the second half, but it only converted those extra possessions into points one time.
All those misses allowed Timpview push the ball in transition, which led to a lot of easy layups.
With Timpview set to kick off region play next week, Dorias is excited about how the team has progressed to this point.
“Without really recognizing it, we stacked our preseason with a lot of strong and a lot of talented teams. We’ve got bumped and bruised a little bit along the way, but where we are now versus Nov. 21 is a huge difference,” said Dorias.
Samantha Hester scored 13 points to lead Westlake, which struggled all night from the field in shooting less than 20 percent.
