The roster for the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl to be played on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas, once again features some top local prospects as well as a few from outside Utah who are being recruited by Beehive State schools.
The locals:
Junior Angilau, OL, East High School: Angilau signed with the Texas Longhorns on Dec. 20 during the early signing period. He signed as an offensive lineman, but has been playing some on both sides of the ball during this week's practices in San Antonio leading up to Saturday's game.
Penei Sewell, OL, Desert Hills High School: The top player in the state, Sewell is on the bowl roster and made the trip to San Antonio but will not play in the game after undergoing surgery following the conclusion of the Thunder's season to repair a torn labrum.
Sewell had originally planned to sign with a school during the early signing period but announced on Twitter the night before it opened that he was going to wait. In that tweet, he said he was still considering USC, Oregon, Alabama and Utah.
His father Gabriel told the Deseret News this week that Penei will announce his decision on National Signing Day Feb. 7.
Other targets for Beehive State schools:
Given that many players signed early, this list is smaller than in recent years, but there are still a few players to watch.
Tyler Manoa, DL, St. Francis High School, Mountain View, Calif.: The one-time BYU commit is no longer considering the Cougars, but Utah is in his top three, along with two other Pac-12 schools, in-state USC and Oregon.
Manoa is the only uncommitted prospect remaining who is still openly considering an in-state school, but there are a few others who still haven't signed who were at one point strongly considering BYU or Utah.
California quarterback Tanner McKee has cooled on the Cougars since they fired offensive coordinator Ty Detmer, while Oregon athlete Talanoa Hufanga had the Utes in his top five but committed to USC on Dec. 28.
The game will kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. MT and can be seen on NBC.
