OREM — The 18th-annual Utah All-Star Wrestling Duals had a twist on Tuesday night.
Along with the traditional 42 matches — 14 in each weight — there were three girl matches for the first time in the event's history.
Bonneville’s Kiersten Bush (113 pounds), Maple Mountain’s Hailey Cox (132) and Springville’s Marlynne Deede (160) made history by winning the inaugural girls all-star matches at UVU.
“I feel very honored to be part of it. These girls that have worked in here and are in these matches have worked so hard for so many years. Really proud to be in one of these,” said Bush, a sophomore who typically wrestles against boys during the high school season.
At last year’s state meet, she went 1-2, with that lone win coming against her older brother McKay in a consolation match. She’s hoping for more success at this year’s state tournament, and getting a taste of the all-star environment at the state tournament next month.
For the boy participants, tournament organizers picked a lineup of wrestlers to fill six teams — 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, a combined 2A/1A team and then a wildcard team. From those 42 wrestlers, they tried to create the best matches possible.
Among those marquee matches was the first match of the night at 160 between Bingham’s Cole Moody and Olympus’ Isaac Wilcox. Moody prevailed 1-0 against Wilcox, who wrestled up from his customary 152 pounds.
This was Moody’s third straight year participating in the All-Star Duals, and he made sure to soak in the experience one last time.
“The other times before I was a little nervous to go out there, but this time I wasn’t, I was mostly happy and excited,” said Moody.
Moody said neither wrestler could get through the heavy defense to get their offense going. With that in mind, he admits he was surprised that Wilcox took the neutral position to start the third period down 1-0.
“I haven’t been known usually to be very tough on top, so I was a little surprised he went neutral,” said Moody, who just last week participated in the prestigious Doc Buchanan Tournament in California and finished first. It included a win over the top-ranked wrestler in California.
One of the other marquee matches on the featured center mat was at 132 pounds between Wasatch’s Stockton O’Brien and Layton’s Tyson Humpherys, both three-time state champs. O’Brien prevailed with a fall with 20 seconds left in the third period.
The final match of the night pitted two aggressive wrestlers, both defending state champs. Box Elder’s three-time state champ Brock Hardy ended up beating Canyon View’s Brady Lowry fairly easily, pinning him at the 3:31 mark. It was the first time the two had wrestled.
“I think that’s just our style. I’ve always been taught to wrestle like that. That’s what makes him such a great competitor, he goes out and goes after it,” said Hardy, who has only lost two matches in his career in the state of Utah.
Morgan’s Chase Trussell, who’s ranked in the top 15 nationally at 220 pounds, beat Pleasant Grove’s Maika Tauteoli in one of the other featured matches.
