SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a 60-year-old Salt Lake man accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl in his neighborhood.

Bobbie Joe Sharp is charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of rape of a child, three counts of sodomy on a child and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. In addition, he was charged with enticing a minor, a second-degree felony. Bail was set at $150,000.

According to charging documents, Sharp gave an 11-year-old girl a cellphone around Thanksgiving, and "has been sending sexually explicit messages to the phone."

From about June to Dec. 21, the girl told police that Sharp "dated her" and "asked her to marry him," the charges state. The charging documents graphically outline sexual conversations and acts that allegedly occurred between Sharp and the child.

"Sharp told her he couldn't wait until he could take her virginity," according to the charges.

The alleged relationship was discovered when the girl's grandmother found the cellphone. Sharp was arrested on Friday.
