Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee and Brenna Chase combined for 50 points in BYU women's basketball's 76-73 loss to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at the Sobrato Center.
"We did a good job of coming back to send it to overtime, but we made too many mistakes and didn’t rebound when we needed to," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "You can’t give away opportunities to the home team."
Devashrayee put up 29 points, while Chase had 21. Sara Hamson scored nine points and had a career-high 20 rebounds. The Cougars fell to 14-11, 9-5 (West Coast Conference), as the Dons improved to 13-12, 8-6.
In the second extra period, Hamson scored the first four points to put the Cougars up 71-67. The Dons then rattled off eight-straight points to lead 75-71 with just 1:31 left.
Devashrayee got to the line and hit both foul shots to cut the San Francisco lead to 75-73 with 55 seconds on the clock. BYU got a defensive stop but couldn't convert on the offensive end. The Dons took over possession after a jump ball with two seconds left. San Francisco's Anna Seilund made one free throw with 1.3 seconds left, and the Cougars couldn't get a game-tying attempt to go down.
Chase helped BYU out of an 8-4 early hole by hitting a 3-pointer and making a transition layup to put the Cougars up 9-8 halfway through the first quarter. She had a steal and lay-in a minute later to make it 11-8.
After consecutive buckets for San Francisco, Paisley Johnson made a nice pass to a cutting Devashrayee for a layup and then knocked down two free throws. BYU led 15-12 heading into the second quarter.
Four minutes into the second quarter, Devashrayee stole a pass and turned the takeaway into a three-point play on the other side. Chase again broke through the Don defense for a left-handed lay-in to put the Cougars up 25-22 with four minutes left in the half.
A 7-3 run gave San Franciso a 29-28 lead with less than two minutes until halftime. Devashrayee made a contested close-range shot with seconds remaining to give BYU a 30-29 edge into the locker room.
Chase led all scorers with 18 points at the half. Devashrayee followed with seven points. Hamson pulled down seven first-half boards.
A few minutes into the third quarter, the Cougars began to pick up the offensive pace. Hamson scored on one end and rejected a Don shot on the other as BYU held a 37-35 lead. Devashrayee made a left-handed shot off the glass as the Cougars extended their lead to 44-37 with 2:21 on the third-quarter clock.
San Francisco made a pair of free throws with just a few seconds left to narrow its deficit to 46-42 with one quarter remaining.
A three-point play and 3-pointer gave the Dons a 49-46 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter, but Devashrayee answered with a three to tie the game at 49-49. BYU went down 57-53 halfway through the final period before Johnson made two free throws.
Devashrayee swished two foul shots as the Cougars trailed 59-57 with two minutes left. A minute later, she hit an off-balance shot while being fouled to tie the game. Her free throw rimmed out as the game remained 59-59.
Johnson grabbed a rebound and was fouled with 22 seconds left. She made two free throws for a 61-59 BYU advantage. With five seconds left, San Francisco's Anna Seilund hit a leaning shot to send the game to overtime.
A pair of free throws for both teams were the only points through the first half of overtime. The Dons then made back-to-back field goals to lead 67-63 with a minute left.
After a Hamson free throw, Devashrayee buried a three with nine seconds left to tie the game at 67-67 and send it to another overtime.
BYU returns home Thursday to take on Pepperdine at 6 p.m. MST. The game will be broadcast on BYUtv.
