Letter: War is not the answer

The Olympics have begun in South Korea, and it is a time when the world comes together peacefully. North Korea and South Korea have combined their teams for the opening ceremony and the women’s ice hockey team. Unfortunately, President Donald Trump has sent Vice President Mike Pence to the Olympics to be a counterpoint to all the good things happening between South Korea and North Korea. Recently, Pence announced drastic new sanctions against North Korea.

As Trump beats the war drums, I encourage our Utah congressional delegation to raise their voices and take back their constitutional responsibility to declare war. I ask Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Mike Lee to co-sponsor S 2047 and Rep. Mia Love to sign on to HR 4837. Both bills engage Congress in the decision to declare war on North Korea and not leave this important decision to one man — the president of the United States. It’s time to be peace builders and use diplomacy with North Korea, not to use saber rattling and sanctions. War is not the answer.
