USU golf: Chase Lansford sits on top of the leaderboard following first round of Southern Utah Invitational

Utah State sophomore golfer Chase Lansford shot a career-best 8-under 64 during the first round of the Southern Utah-hosted Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational held Monday at the par-72, 6,781-yard Sunbrook Golf Club. Overall, all five of Utah State’s golfers are currently among the top-15 players in the field.

For Lansford, it is his fifth round in the 60s this year and the seventh of his career. It is also his sixth round under par this season and the 13th of his career. Furthermore, his opening round 64 is the best round by an Aggie golfer since Tanner Jenson also shot a 64 during the fall of the 2014 season.

Utah State is currently in second place in the nine-team field at 6-under 282, and it is just one shot behind Utah Valley, which shot an opening round of 7-under 281. USU also has an eight-shot lead on third-place Southern Utah, which began the tournament with a 2-over 290.

During his opening round, Lansford recorded one eagle and eight birdies to go along with two bogeys for his 8-under 64.

Utah State sophomore Hayden Eckert is tied for sixth place at 1-under 71, which is his third round under par this season and the ninth of his career. Freshman Colten Cordingley is currently in 14th place at 1-over 73, and senior Braxton Miller and redshirt freshman Andy Hess are tied for 15th after opening rounds of 2-over 74.

Utah State concludes play in the Thunderbird Invitational with 18 holes on Tuesday.
