Herriman High athlete dies in Riverton crash with school bus

RIVERTON — A Herriman High School senior who played baseball and football was killed Wednesday after police say his car rammed into the back of a school bus.

Bryson Hathaway, 17, died in the collision at 12600 South and Bangerter Highway about 1:45 p.m, Unified police said Wednesday.

The school's football team on Facebook said "we are devastated and heartbroken by the news of losing one of our brothers," and sent condolences to the boy's dad, the team's defensive coordinator.

"Please hug your kids extra long and remind them to be safe," the team wrote.

Drake Elliott said he and Hathaway had played football together since they were 8 years old and drove to school together almost every day. He said his friend was an energetic, hard worker who was impossible not to like.

"He's the sweetest friend you'll ever meet," Elliott said.

Elliott and other friends were planning a memorial, possibly during baseball season, to honor their friend and his love of sports.

On Wednesday afternoon, the school bus was stopped at the traffic light when it was hit from behind, Unified police said.

The impact was so great that the car went about halfway underneath the bus.

A ninth-grade girl and the driver were the only two on the school bus at the time and both were in good condition, Unified Det. Ken. Hansen said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, but speed was believed to be a factor.

Hathaway's school was set to have grief counselors in coming days.
