Peavler: Way-too-early breakdown of Utah State's 2018 football schedule

It is way too early to be looking at Utah State's schedule. Spring ball is still weeks away, and the Mountain West hasn't announced its conference schedule yet.

Since we can't take a look at Utah State's conference games just yet, here's a way-too-early look at the Aggies' non-conference slate. Note: This story will be updated once the conference schedule is announced.

at Michigan State, Friday, Aug. 31

2017 record: 10-3 (7-2 Big Ten)

The Spartans bounced back nicely after a shocking 2016 season where they won only three games. However, Michigan State has to deal with the ramifications of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal that has already led university President Lou Anna Simon to resign. The NCAA has opened an investigation into Michigan State, although it is still unclear if or how the football program will be affected by this. ESPN's Outside the Lines wrote a scathing report on Michigan State athletics that included head coach Mark Dantonio. At this point it's anybody's guess on what changes, if any, we'll see around the football program by the time August rolls around.

Brian Lewerke was a solid sophomore quarterback last season with 2,793 yards passing along with 559 yards rushing and 25 total touchdowns. In all, Michigan State returns 21 starters.

vs. New Mexico State, Saturday, Sept. 8

2017 record: 7-6 (4-4 Sun Belt)

New Mexico State not only went to its first bowl game since 1960, it also beat Utah State in overtime 26-20. The Aggies in blue won't have to wait too long to try to get revenge on the Aggies in red. Plus, New Mexico State loses a lot of key players, including QB Tyler Rogers (4,016 yards, 27 TDs), RB Larry Rose III (939 yards, 10 TDs) or WR Jaleel Scott (1,079 yards, 9 TDs). Losing that amount of talent may be too much for New Mexico State to beat Utah State again, particularly since this game is in Logan.

vs. Tennessee Tech, Saturday, Sept. 15

2017 record: 1-10 (1-7 Ohio Valley)

While some FCS teams have gone toe-to-toe and even beaten big-time FBS teams, Tennessee Tech won just one game last season.

at BYU, Friday, Oct. 5

2017 record: 4-9 (FBS independent)

Utah State crushed the Cougars 40-24 as BYU's offense turned over the ball seven times, including two pick-sixes. BYU's offense was so bad that being the school's only Heisman Trophy winner wasn't enough to save Ty Detmer's job at offensive coordinator. Enter former LSU offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, and he has quite the mess to clean up. BYU has a lot to figure out before the season begins, and we'll see if Grimes can get things turned around in time.
