SALT LAKE CITY — In an effort to be more eco-friendly, the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control will start a trial glass recycling program at the wine store at 280 W. Harris Ave. (1550 South).
Beginning Tuesday, Momentum Recycling will place containers for glass bottles in the store’s parking lot. Customers will then be able recycle their empty glass bottles on their next shopping trip for the next couple of months. The containers will be provided at no cost by Momentum Recycling, and the program is being implemented at no cost to the Utah taxpayers.
The department said the idea for the program came from customer suggestions, and if successful, it will be expanded to other state liquor stores.
In a statement, the department said it is committed to recycling, and that the cardboard boxes that spirits and wine are shipped in are routinely recycled. In 2016, the department began distributing reusable fabric bags customers can use for purchases in place of paper bags.
