SALT LAKE CITY — The Bureau of Land Management’s Salt Lake field office and the Raptor Inventory Nest Survey are seeking volunteers to collect and manage data regarding the nesting ecology of eagles, falcons, hawks, ospreys and owls.

Prospective volunteers must contact the nest survey group and attend a training session on either Saturday, Feb. 24, or Saturday, March 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the field office, 2370 S. Decker Lake Blvd., West Valley City.

Prior experience and scientific credentials are not required to volunteer. It is recommended that prospective volunteers own a pair of binoculars, a GPS unit, digital camera and have an email address. Volunteers will be asked to commit at least two field days per month from March through June, monitoring an assigned area.

“Data collected by RINS volunteers is making a difference in the way we manage public lands in Utah’s West Desert,” Mellissa Wood, acting office manager of the Salt Lake field office, said in a statement. “Knowing where these indicator species are nesting and identifying fledgling success rate, supports the BLM’s decision-making process.
