SALT LAKE CITY — Utah left no doubt who was the dominant team in its Saturday night matchup with UCLA.

The No. 7 Utes (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) took control in the second quarter and rode a standout defensive effort to an easy 49-3 victory over the Bruins (4-6, 4-3 Pac-12) at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Here’s three takeaways that defined the game.

Defense dominates UCLA

Utah’s defense had an outstanding night, forcing the Bruins into five turnovers. That included forcing four of those turnovers after UCLA had driven in Utah territory, including two fumbles inside the Utes’ red zone in the second half.

The Bruins lost three fumbles in the game, and Mika Tafua took a fumble from UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson 68 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, as Utah outscored the Bruins 21-0 in the second to take control of the game.

UCLA had five possessions that reached Utah territory and didn’t lead to points. The Utes held the Bruins to 269 total yards and 3.68 yards per play.

Huntley and Moss shine

The Utes’ offensive stars led the way again, as Utah put up 536 yards of total offense.

Running back Zack Moss finished with 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns to go with 73 receiving yards, with most of those yards coming in the first half.

Quarterback Tyler Huntley, meanwhile, showed off his arm, completing 14 of 18 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a first-half score. He threw touchdown passes of 69 yards to Brant Kuithe and 83 yards to Samson Nacua in the second half.

Defensive stars

Like the offense, several defenders had standout numbers. Safety Julian Blackmon led the Utes with 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while defensive end Bradlee Anae had two sacks for a loss of 22 yards.

Blackmon had one of the team’s two interceptions, while defensive lineman Pita Tonga had the other, setting up Utah’s final touchdown of the night.
