A porch pirate in Minnesota stole some gifts off a family’s porch. She left a thank-you note there as well.

What happened: Hilary Smith never received the gift she ordered online for her boss. She went outside to check to see if it arrived. Instead, she found a slip of paper from a porch pirate, according to CNN.

  • “I looked down, and there was a piece of notebook paper folded neatly on the top step, where the package probably should have been,” Smith told WCCO.

The letter read: “So just a quick little thank you for leaving me the (opportunity) of stealing your package. Very nice of you. Thank you. ... The new owner of your package.”

What they’re saying: Smith wasn’t overly upset by the note.

  • Smith (via WCCO): “I do appreciate a nicely crafted thank-you note, but this is ridiculous,”
  • St. Paul police Sgt. Mike Ernster said victims should contact authorities if they’re worried about their gifts: “We want people to report crimes as they occur so we can keep track of them and hopefully solve them.”

Next: Smith told CBS Minnesota she hopes the pirate comes back. This time, though, Smith will leave “a little gift from my dog” on the porch.
