LAYTON — A local church congregation recently embraced the spirit of the Christmas season by giving gifts to needy schoolchildren.

Members of the Light of the Valley Lutheran Church in Layton held an Angel Tree activity in which they rallied to meet the Christmas needs and wants of more than 30 children at E.G. King Elementary School, just down the block from their church.

Church member Erica Curtis collaborated with the school to find out what was needed and coordinated the project with other people in the community. The gifts were delivered to the school on Dec. 15, according to Rev. Jonathan Klein, who serves as pastor at Light of the Valley.

“The Angel Tree went great,” Rev. Klein said. “We are thankful to be able to serve our community in this way.”

In the past, Light of the Valley Lutheran Church has partnered with the Division of Child and Family Services.

Light of the Valley Lutheran Church was established in 1992 and today serves about 150 members, Rev. Klein said.

Light of the Valley Lutheran Church’s big event in December was its Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship service. The congregation joined in singing traditional Christmas hymns and expressed gratitude for God’s blessings. After singing “Silent Night,” members read the story of Christ’s birth in the Gospel of Luke while holding candles, Pastor Klein said.
