ST. GEORGE — Dixie State senior Katie Ford was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Golf Player of the Week Wednesday for her performance at last weekend’s Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate played at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
Ford (5-8; St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS/Utah Valley) posted her best individual showing of the season as she finished tied for first place with four other players in the 36-hole event, though she was denied her first individual win of the season in the first playoff hole.
After opening with a 3-over-par 75 this past Friday, the senior fired a tournament and career-low 4-under 68 in Saturday’s final round to vault 22 spots up the leaderboard to finish the event at minus-1 143. The senior went out in 3-under 33 and carded five birdies and 12 pars en route to her first collegiate sub-70 round, while her 68 bested the DSU 18-hole school scoring record by one stroke.
Ford’s two-round total of 143 was the second-lowest 36-hole score in DSU's program history, and the senior now owns DSU’s top-three lowest 36-hole scores overall. In addition, Ford tied for fourth-overall in the 113-player field in par-4 scoring (3.95) and pars (25), t-7th in par-3 scoring (3.00) and finished t-13th in total birdies (6).
Dixie State is in the midst of a two-week break from tournament play in preparation for its debut at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships, which will be held April 21-23, at the Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona.
