SALT LAKE CITY — Months ago, the University of Utah announced that it will expand Rice-Eccles Stadium by increasing the capacity to 51,444 while revamping the south zone.
The school is ready to reveal additional information, as Utah sent an email Friday that there will be a “major announcement” regarding the expansion prior to the Utes’ Red-White Game on Saturday.
The announcement will take place prior to the game’s 11 a.m. start.
The school previously laid out details for the expansion in mid-November 2018. The $80 million project, which is expected to be completed prior to the 2021 season, will increase the seating capacity from its current 45,807 configuration by expanding the south end zone. The current building and seats in the south end zone will be demolished and replaced with a new structure that connects the east and west concourses, turning the stadium into a bowl.
The south expansion project includes the addition of 1,000 chair or bleacher seats, new premium seating in luxury suites and loge boxes, as well as club, ledge and rooftop seating. The locker rooms for both home and away teams, as well as rooms for officials and coaches — located under the south bleachers — will also be updated.
Other upgrades in the south end zone include creating a recruiting lounge, a field-level club lounge, a kitchen and an outdoor patio.
