MOAB — A Moab man died Sunday after being hit by a car in the middle of a highway, troopers said.
A southbound Toyota car had stopped in the center turn lane on U.S. 191 in Moab after items fell off the vehicle about 9:20 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol said. A passenger in the car, Carl Q. Bierschied, 37, got out to pick up the items.
A southbound Dodge pickup truck in the area noticed the car stopped in the center of the road facing north and then noticed Bierschied bent over, the UHP said. The driver swerved to avoid Bierschied but hit him.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, troopers said, and he died on scene.
